Air pollution has devastating effects on the environment. Nonetheless, volcanic eruptions and forest fires are examples of air pollution long before humans ever existed. Human-caused air pollution was the sole reason for today\u2019s environmental catastrophe. Since the beginning of using coal, greenhouse gases have been accumulating in the atmosphere. This negatively impacts the earth, which then affects all life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Can Air Pollution Do to the Environment?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are various air pollution effects on the environment. The major of them are: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Acid Rain<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\"Acid<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Air pollution effects on the environment might manifest as acid rain or smog. Even secondhand smoke from cigarettes is now regarded as air pollution. However, the consequences of this pollution are severe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rainwater has a pH between 5 and 5.5, i.e., it is slightly acidic, whereas the pH of pure water (also referred to as distilled or deionized water) is rated at 7. The mixture of certain atmospheric pollutants with rainwater causes it to be much more acidic. Such pollutants include sulfur dioxide as well as nitrogen dioxide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rain with a pH of 4 is typically considered acid rain since it is ten times more acidic than rain with a pH 5. The effects of acid rain on the soils are very damaging to natural ecosystems. More than half the content of soil comprises minerals. The aluminum will dissolve in the acidic soil, thereby preventing the root from carrying out its function of cell division and elongation. At the same time, acid rain washes away nutrients essential to plant growth, like calcium, which creates a deficiency for the plant and makes it harder for it to take up water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Eutrophication<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Eutrophication is the state in which a water body has received an oversupply of nutrients, minerals, favored more commonly associated with the excessive development of algae. Algae consume much oxygen in the water, besides blocking sunlight from reaching submerged plants and thereby hindering photosynthesis. This kills aquatic plants and animals due to the resultant nutrient-free condition of the water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human activity has been accelerating this process. One of the essential nutrients needed for algal growth is nitrogen dioxide, which is produced in excess during energy synthesis. Eutrophication is primarily caused by the use of fertilizers since it is common to use nitrogen fertilizer in agriculture for many reasons that include its application as a remedy to make plants grow better and reduce yellowing of leaves. If there has been no uptake by the plants remaining on the land, eventually, rainfall will wash this excess fertilizer into the adjacent water body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Climate Change<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The relation between air pollution and climate change becomes intricate because, despite the fact that they originate from the same source and activity of man, in most cases, greenhouse gases are separated by their effects from ordinary air pollutants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While greenhouse gases harm the globe by warming it, endangering the existence of all life on it, air pollutants are compounds that directly affect our health and the ecology. This separation does not always account for an accurate difference between the two categories as much as it should. Some air pollutants- such as surface-level ozone- have energy-retaining properties within the atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of note, however, is the fact that some air pollutants have been found useful in the mitigation of climate change. It has been discovered that aerosol, a dispersion of airborne particles often created from the combustion of fossil fuels, has cooling properties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By altering the quantity of solar radiation that enters and exits the atmosphere and its capacity to create clouds, aerosols contribute to the planet’s cooling in two ways. Aerosols can reflect solar radiation back into space because it is primarily light in color. Aerosols can have tremendous cooling power. For instance, over 20 million tons<\/a> of sulfur dioxide and ash particles were shot into the atmosphere across a distance of 12 miles during the 1991 volcanic eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. The Earth took 2 years to cool after that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air pollution effects on the environment can be prevented. There are a lot of small things that each of us can do on our own. If the distance is short, choose to walk or bike, and if public transportation is available, take it. Try to minimize the use of vehicles when you\u2019re the only one in the car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
